Baptism

"We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.” Romans 6:4

Outward expression.

What is Baptism?

Baptism is a public declaration of your faith in Jesus Christ and a powerful symbol of the new life you have in Him. It represents dying to your old self and being raised to walk in newness of life through the power of Christ’s resurrection. Baptism doesn’t save you—it’s an outward expression of an inward transformation, showing your obedience to Jesus and your commitment to follow Him. It’s a joyful step of faith that celebrates what God has done in your heart and identifies you with the family of believers.

  • To follow the example set by Christ. "At that time Jesus came from Nazareth and  was baptized by John in the river." Mark 1:9
  • To be obedient to Christ as Lord because He commands it. "Jesus said, 'Go then, to all people everywhere and make them disciples, baptize them in the  name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and then teach them to obey everything I have  commanded you.'" Matthew 28:19-20
  • To demonstrate that you are a believer.  "...many of the people who heard Him believed and  were baptized." Acts 18:8 "We know that we have come to know Him, if we obey His commands." 1  John 2:3
  • Baptism illustrates Christ's death, burial, and resurrection. "Christ died for our sins...He  was buried...and He rose again." 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 ”For when you were baptized, you were  buried with Christ, and in baptism you were also raised with Christ." Colossians 2:12
  • Baptism illustrates your new life as a Christian and your desire to be united with Christ in death/resurrection. "When someone becomes a Christian, they become a brand-new person inside. The old life  has passed away and a new life has begun!" 2 Corinthians 5:1 "By our baptism then we are buried  with Him and share in His death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead...so also we  may live a new life!" Romans 6:4
  • Here is a good thought about Baptism:
      • Baptism is like a wedding ring - it's the outward symbol of the commitment you made in your heart.
      • Baptism is like a declaration or an announcement to other believers. Baptism is the public display and announcement that Christ has saved you on the inside.
      • Baptism is what a Christian should live out each day. A death to our sin nature through Christ and the life of Christ now living in us.
  • Believers should be baptized by immersion.
      • Jesus was baptized by immersion.   "As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went  up out of the water.” Matthew 3:16
      • Every baptism in the Bible was by immersion.  "...then both Philip and the man went  down into the water and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the  water..." Acts 8:38-39
      • The word "baptize" means "to dip under or to sink."   The Greek word baptizo  means "to immerse, dip under, sink."
      • Immersion symbolizes a burial! "We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life." Romans 6:4

When you have decided to receive Christ as your Savior, you can and should be baptized. "Those who believed...were baptized... that day!" Acts 2:41
